Baltimore: Apple employees vote in favor of a union

More than 100 employees at an Apple store in a Baltimore suburb voted Saturday to unionize by a 2-to-1 margin, adding to a growing wave of support for organizing for greater labor protections in the technology, retail and service sectors, a union said.

Workers in Towson, Maryland, voted 65-33 to affiliate with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the union announced.

The outcome of the vote was not immediately confirmed with the National Labor Relations Board, which would have to certify it. The board also did not respond to messages for questions at this time.

The union and employees interested in organizing said they sent Apple CEO Tim Cook a notice last month that they were seeking to organize a union. The statement said they were motivated by seeking rights we don’t currently have.

I applaud the courage of CORE members at the Apple store in Towson for achieving this historic victory, union president Robert Martinez Jr. said in a statement.

They made a great sacrifice on behalf of the thousands of Apple employees nationwide who had their eyes on this vote,” he added.

Apple spokesman Josh Lipton told The Associated Press by phone that the company declined to comment on Saturday’s developments.
