At least 122 social leaders and human rights defenders were assassinated in Colombia during the first seven months of the year, according to a report by the Ombudsman that places Narino at the top of this black list.

The department of Narino, in the southwest of the country, accumulates 17 homicides of activists between January and July, compared to twelve in Antioquia and eleven in Putumayo.

By sectors, community leaders are the main victims of this upsurge in violence, with at least 33 deaths, while 27 deaths of indigenous activists and 25 community defenders have also been recorded.

The Ombudsman, Carlos Camargo, has warned in a statement that this type of crime “represents a serious impact on communities and democracy”, since the victims “are the representatives of the requests, needs and voice of the most vulnerable people.

For this reason, he has urged that the State provide social leaders with “the necessary guarantees” so that they can carry out their work. “We must keep our guard up so that the State guarantees their protection, their safety and that of their families and that they can calmly carry out their work in defense of the communities,” he emphasized.
