The last Secretary of Defense of the United States during the Presidency of Barack Obama, Ashton Carter, has died this Tuesday at the age of 68.

As reported by his family in a statement, Carter was in the city of Boston on Monday when he suffered a “sudden” cardiac arrest at night, reports CNN.

Carter, who had previously served as deputy secretary of defense, was nominated by Obama to replace Chuch Hagel as head of the department in December 2014, finally ascending to the post after two months.

Among his main achievements stands out having fought the advance of the Islamic State in the Middle East and also having promoted cooperation in military matters with Ukraine.

Back then, Carter considered “very important” to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which were facing Russian threats to territorial integrity.
