An IAEA delegation arrives in Iran to try to unblock nuclear negotiations

A delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived in Tehran this Sunday to attempt new negotiations with their Iranian counterparts and representatives of the Foreign Ministry.

According to sources in the Iranian nuclear organization, there is a “realistic hope” that the outstanding differences with the UN nuclear agency will be clarified and resolved in Tehran, according to the Tasnim news agency.

In the negotiations, the IAEA is mainly concerned about explanations about three sites in Iran where remnants of nuclear material have been found that point to clandestine activities in the past.

Tehran has denied all accusations in this regard, stating that its nuclear projects are peaceful and that the country is not pursuing a secret weapons program. On the other hand, however, Iranian nuclear chief Mohammed Eslami announced on Saturday that the country’s uranium enrichment capacity was higher than ever in the history of the Iranian nuclear industry.

According to Tehran observers, nuclear negotiations between Iran and the West are at an impasse. Even if a technical agreement were reached with the IAEA, there would be no progress in the nuclear conflict. The reason is the brutal crackdown on protests critical of the system, which has been condemned in the strongest terms in the West and has prompted new sanctions against the Islamic country.

After the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran in 2018, Tehran began flouting the restrictions agreed to in the deal and making IAEA inspections more difficult.

Currently, Iran enriches uranium to a purity level of 60%. According to IAEA data, this figure is not significantly less than the 90% required for nuclear weapons. Iran claims that it is technically capable of enriching uranium to 90% purity. Under the 2015 Vienna nuclear deal, Iran cannot enrich its uranium above 4%.
