A ‘streamer’ spends more than 20,000 euros to buy and save from oblivion all the games in the 3DS and Wii U digital stores

Last year, Nintendo announced the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS digital store closures and the date is dangerously close, specifically March 27.

With this decision, thousands of games from its catalog cannot be purchased on any platformnot even on Nintendo Switch, and it is striking that many of them are exclusive to Wii U and 3DS.

That is to say, will be completely forgotten.

To prevent this from happening, a streamer has taken action on the matter and 21,378 euros have been spent to buy all the games from the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U digital stores.

Jirad Khalil, the content creator in question, has been made with 866 Wii U games, 1547 Nintendo 3DS titles and 464 eShop cards, which take up 1.2TB on Wii U and GHB267 on 3DS.

Behind it seems that there is a good reason, as stated in Nintendo Life who has spoken with Khalil: “Since the industry began, we run the daily risk of losing games forever, that’s why this is important.”

This is what Super Nintendo World looks like inside: from Mario Kart rides to Princess Peach cupcakes

“And that’s why I’ve been a longtime supporter of nonprofits like the Video Game History Foundation and their efforts to support game code preservation, print media, and more,” he continues.

The task has not been simply to take out a wallet and go through the boxbut many games needed to complete the main campaign to access the DLC, since works from DSiWare, Virtual Console and all kinds of expansions are included here.

Here’s a video documenting Khalil’s entire process in case you’re curious.

Best of all, he intends to donate all content to the Video Game History Foundation. to preserve a part of video game history.

“We actually started our own Preserved Play charity event, which is an annual charity event to raise money for them, and it’s happening this year on April 15 and 16 on my Twitch channel, and at the end I will be donating these consoles and all storage to the Video Game History Foundation so that all these games can continue to live,” he reveals.

“So that’s it, all available Nintendo Wii U and 3DS games have been saved. It’s cost a lot of time and money, but it’s been worth it for the sake of game preservation.”
