A parliamentary subcommittee advises accusing President Castillo of treason

The President of Peru, Pedro Castillo – PRESIDENCY OF PERU

The Parliament’s Subcommittee on Constitutional Accusations has approved a report, which will now pass into the hands of the Permanent Commission, in which it advises constitutionally accusing the president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, of treason against the country.

The report has been approved by the minimum –11 votes in favor and ten against– by a subcommittee headed by the former president of Parliament Lady Camones and where, although the allies of Fujimorism are the majority, they have required the votes in favor of other formations such as Alianza para el Progreso or Somos Peru.

The resolution of the Subcommittee on Constitutional Accusations has concluded that Castillo should be disqualified for five years from any position at the head of the public function after allegedly having committed the crimes of treason against the fatherland and having violated the Constitution by speaking of granting Bolivia a possible access to the sea, collects ‘La Republica’.

Now, once the subcommittee has taken the first step to disqualify Castillo, the report will be evaluated by the Permanent Commission and, if the matter is also approved, it will finally be the Plenary Session of the Congress of the Republic that has the last word.

President Castillo would thus face a possible accusation of treason against the fatherland, which would be the culmination of an innumerable list of complaints and incriminations against the president in the little more than 16 months that he has led Peru.

In this time, the head of state has not only seen how he has been accused of different crimes, most of them for alleged corruption, but has also dedicated much of his time to appointing new ministers and up to four prime ministers in a remarkably tense political context.

The disqualification requires 66 votes, subtracting the members of the aforementioned Permanent Commission. The Peruvian press has warned that, based on the parliamentary arithmetic already shown on previous occasions, it is possible that the opposition has the numbers in its favor.
