A new version affirms that ‘Iván Márquez’ is alive and being treated in Caracas

The fate of Luciano Marín Arango, alias ‘Iván Márquez’, the main leader of the Second Marquetalia dissidence, is still far from clear, after new versions appear while waiting for the Colombian authorities to confirm or not whether he died in combat in Venezuela; the last one is that he would be alive and being cared for in Caracas.

This is how a new version has been made known from Venezuela to the Government of Colombia, as revealed by the radio station RCN. However, the main source of Casa Nariño insists that ‘Iván Márquez’ would have died in Venezuelan territory during a confrontation with another armed group, still unspecified.

For the moment, the governments of Colombia and Venezuela have preferred to be cautious and have not ventured to confirm either of the two hypotheses. From Bogotá they have always accused Caracas of protecting dissent, despite the fact that one of its leaders, Seuxis Pausias Hernández, alias ‘Jesús Santrich’, was killed in May 2021 during an operation by Venezuelan forces.

If ‘Iván Márquez’ had died, it would be the umpteenth blow to the structure of the Second Marquetalia in just over half a year, after the casualties of other leaders such as Henry Castellanos, alias ‘Romaña’, and Hernán Darío Velásquez, known as ‘El Paisa’.

Since then his leadership has been weaker than ever. In addition to the fall of its strong men, it is added that the original dissidence with which it tried to unite the rest of the dissatisfied groups has been far from having the dimensions and capacities of the disappeared FARC guerrilla, with these factions aspiring to greater economic autonomy, than to gain ideological packaging.

It is suspected that the fall of ‘Iván Márquez’ could be the work of the men led by Néstor Gregorio Vera Hernández, alias ‘Iván Mordisco’, in retaliation for the death of Miguel Botache Santillana, alias ‘Gentil Duarte’, who until his death month of May he had led the most powerful dissident group, Front 1.

Both dissidences have been leading a bitter dispute not only because of the substantial benefits that drug trafficking routes and the illegal marketing of other raw materials provide, but also because of the symbolic benefits of being the main rebel gang heir to the FARC.
