A group of 200 people vandalizes a mural by David Alfaro Siqueiros at UNAM

A group of around 200 people from the Faculty of Arts and Design of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) vandalized this Friday a mural by the Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros, Dates in the history of Mexico or the right to culture. The legal team of the center has begun to gather evidence to denounce the damage to the work “of invaluable artistic value”, located in the Torre de Rectoria, south of Mexico City. The UNAM has affirmed that it will open a criminal complaint, and has assured that it remains in line with dialogue and conciliation with the students of the Faculty of Arts and Design. “Violent actions, such as the one that occurred this afternoon, are crude provocations by people who hide their identity behind a cloth and who, for malicious purposes, try to destabilize the academic work environment that prevails at the university,” the center has defended in a release.

Along with Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente, Alfaro Siqueiros is considered one of the great exponents of Mexican muralism, the artistic movement that began at the beginning of the 20th century. This generation of artists gave life to the idea that the Artistic Center of Mexico City sought to exhibit: the creation of a national art with the use of modernism.
