The match played this Monday by the Portugal and Uruguay World Cup teams in Qatar was interrupted for a moment after the invasion of the pitch by a person carrying a rainbow flag, symbol of the LGTBIQ+ movement, whose rights are not recognized in the Asian country, and messages of support for Ukraine and women in Iran.
Although the match broadcast could barely capture the moment, it was possible to briefly see someone running across the field with this flag. Photos posted on social media also showed the front of the fan’s jersey read ‘Save Ukraine’ and the back read ‘Respect Iranian Women’.
Before the start of the World Cup, a group of national teams planned to wear a multicolored captain’s armband with the message ‘One Love’ in a sign of equality and diversity, but had to back down in the face of FIFA’s threat of sanctions, among them at a sporting level.
