A beastly auction: sold a T-Rex for 4.8 million euros

It has been built with 300 authentic bones, unearthed from three different sites in the United States: Hell Creek and Lance Creek, in Montana, and Wyoming, between 2008 and 2013. This Tuesday it was auctioned in Zurich, Switzerland, where it was awarded for 4 8 million euros, somewhat less than expected.

It is an impressive Tyrannosaurus rex, nicknamed Trinity, measuring 11 and a half meters long by four meters high. More than half of the restored fossil is original bone material and its skull, experts point out, is particularly rare, as well as being remarkably well preserved.

As reported by the auction house Koller, the sale amounted to 5.5 million Swiss francs – practically the same in euros – including the “buyer’s premium” and fees.

T. rex inhabited the Earth between 65 and 67 million years ago. A study published two years ago in the journal Science estimated that some 2.5 billion dinosaurs lived.

This is the first time that a T. rex skeleton has been put up for auction in Europe. Two years ago, a triceratops skeleton declared by Guinness World Records as the largest in the world, and known as “Big John”, sold for 6.6 million euros to a private collector at an auction held in Paris.
