11 of Amazon’s most useful accessibility features, from Dialog Boost to Show and Tell

As indicated in the same World Health Organization, about 1.3 billion people, one in six of us, currently experience a significant disability. That truth is at the heart of everything JoAnna Hansen does at Amazon.

“Accessibility is built into the core of everything we do,” said Hansen, who leads accessibility for Amazon’s global stores.

Hansen works with Peter Korn, Director of Device Accessibility, one of Amazon’s original accessibility architects. For a decade, Korn and his colleagues Helped find a contact group for employees with disabilitiesCreated an advisory council of global experts on disability and accessibility, and advocated for accessible design across the organization.

“Today, accessibility is at the forefront of people’s minds,” Korn said. “The code we write will go out and make a huge difference in people’s lives. I am excited about the impact we can continue to have in the next 10 years.

Clients, attorneys and others are paying attention. In 2019, Amazon won the prestigious title Helen Keller Achievement Award American Foundation for the Blind for their work to improve access to products and services for people with disabilities. More recent, Amazon was honored with the Disability Smart Technology Award in Business Disability Forumof the Disability Smart Awards. It was welcome validation, but the biggest endorsement comes from consumers who are affected by Amazon’s affordable products.
