Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced Thursday that his new electoral police force is in the process of arresting a score of ex-convicts accused of illegally voting in the 2020 elections.

DeSantis explained at a press conference that these former criminals are currently accused of electoral fraud, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of $5,000 (4,960 euros), the newspaper ‘Politico’ reported.

“This is just the first step. There are many more in the pipeline,” DeSantis said, before adding that they are “not going to turn a blind eye to this. The days of that happening in Florida are over.”

DeSantis has said the arrests are an example of voter fraud cases that “were slipping away” before his election police force began operating in July. He has also promised more arrests of people who voted in more than one jurisdiction or who were not US citizens.

The defendants –convicted of murder and sexual crimes– would have voted illegally by not correctly requesting the restoration of their rights or by the seriousness of their crimes.

In 2018, Florida voters overwhelmingly voted to restore voting rights to felons, except those convicted of murder and sex crimes.

The state director of the association All Voting Is Local -which defends the right to vote-, Brad Ashwell, has indicated that this announcement could intimidate some ex-convicts who have the right to vote, according to what Bloomberg has collected. “The timing is incredibly suspicious,” he has criticized him.
